Participant@kariIt’s really nice to know the logistics of it from Rob’s perspective (Through Ange). From a player perspective, if the menu had been released earlier than the night of Thursday the 14th, I would have been able to provide a confirmation earlier than that, but with my dietary restrictions (not preferences), I couldn’t yay or nay until the post went up. I checked the boards daily for the menu until it was posted. I have no problem bringing food up for myself at the last minute, but it’s easier just to pay for Mythic’s, and that’s why I waited for the menu to be posted before I signed up. The day/time that the menu is posted doesn’t matter to me (I don’t mind checking the boards daily. I do it regardless, haha), but if it matters to staff, that’s definitely something to consider!
I think we can all work together this weekender season and really have some spectacular meals… but only if all of those meals are crepes…
…and tacos.

Participant@bort-bitterbeerLove all the ideas! Yes some are less feasible than others but they do lead to other ideas along the same lines that can work, so keep them comming! The more things we have on the list the easier it becomes to create a menu and that means the sooner I can get it posted.
Crepes rock. I tried them once at a weekender = Fail. The only thing I could figure was that the altitude affected the batter. On the bright side I can totally cook up a few hundred over a few days time of doing a few hear and there and they freeze awsome. So fear not we will have crepes!
I try to remember everyones dietary restrictions and make accomodations, believe it or not they make hotdogs out of chicken and or turkey which I would have bought one package of those. I was unaware of Kari’s but now I know I can make arrangments for that.
If you do have a restriction please shoot me an e-mail.
NOW back to the program. More food ideas.

Thanks for bringing that up! I think that’s a good point. If a menu is worked out a week in advance, that could give plenty of people time to sign up and allows Rob (who leaves for the campsite on Thurs day) time to get back to people about dietary restrictions etc so no one feels ignored due to lack of signal/tech. That would also make it easier to have a cut off for food sign up, which allows Rob to know exactly how many he’s feeding and to possibly prep some stuff in advance.
I think the cooler corn and crepes both sound fantastic from a logistical perspective (though the things that go into the crepes may be time consuming to cut up, which is something to consider). Pre-smoked chickens could be great too, for sandwiches or crepes. Spinach salad, maybe a pasta salad (pre-made). Etc etc. Keep up the good ideas!
Also, Mike. Stop rehashing. We get that you love crepes, but there are other foods too. :c

Participant@kariI want to make it clear that I’m totally okay with nobody accommodating for my dietary restrictions, which is why I didn’t say anything. It sounds silly, but I know that I have the most inconvenient disease when it comes to camping. I am ALWAYS super happy to take responsibility for myself in the food department. I will not complain, I will not cry, and I will always, always have a good time on weekenders regardless of what accommodations are and are not provided. Rob, you are doing the majority of the work out of sheer willpower and kindness, and to ask anything extra of you strikes me as insane. I refuse to do it. Don’t you dare accommodate me!
With that said, I totally love all foods. My biggest concern about food is making it more portable and cutting out on dishes/plate ware. For example, if we were to have spaghetti, wouldn’t it be awesome to have fried spaghetti? You can even carry it, ’cause it makes a pancake!

Participant@warriorsdebtPotatoes! All forms of potatoes. On a related note, hobo dinners are super easy and tasty. Especially if we have fires going, we could cook a jillion of them at once.
Oatmeal or cereals, or ziploc omelettes for breakfast could be nice.
We could also try shish kebabs, or hearty stews or soups for dinner when it’s chilly.Anything super hardy and calorie dense sounds great to me. I know that by the time mealtime rolls around I’m starving and in a hella calorie deficit–I’ll eat ANYTHING that will fill me up and keep me going. I love the idea of bar or buffet-style meals–this weekend’s tacos were probably my favourite meal so far.

Participant@anjiAlternative to tacos: Hawaiian haystacks (don’t call me any names, Kari, that is JUST WHAT THEY ARE CALLED). As far as I am aware, they are pretty much anything you have handy put over rice. I bring it up because when I was a kid, my mother would often make crepe fillings that we would not be able to consume all of with said crepes. Then she would reheat them as toppings for the haystacks the next day.
Examples: ham with cheese sauce, shredded BBQ chicken (or shredded spicy Thai chicken), turkey and cream sauce, chicken with spinach and artichoke sauce, etc. They were all easily whipped up ahead of time and reheated later.
Also, I’m interested on how people feel about curry. I think chicken or beef curry over rice would be super delicious and has the benefit of getting more delicious over time.

Participant@anjiAh, I knew there were theoretically people who didn’t. I was hoping such elusive creatures were not the type to frequent Mythic events…

I love rice. Rice is easy to make while camping. Any meat + gravy combo is delicious and nutritious. However, you cannot hold rice and hit people with weapons. I mean, you can… but it would be ill-advised. You could actually take rice, beef tips (beef & gravy), and wrap it in a crepe for maximum portable delicious. You could make potato crepes for even more delicious meat+rice+gravy holdings.
I’m crazy about the potato discussion. I, TOO, ADORE POTATOES. I feel like handmade french fries would need to be for something special.
Also, I’m basically going all-out rabid Hawaiian on you: spam, rice, and eggs is a freaking ridiculously delicious breakfast. Spam cooks quicker and cheaper than bacon. Obviously there’s a huge vendetta against spam, but I’m telling you… nom. I also make spam musubi, which nobody will ever eat except me so I’m ending this post now.

You can only throw something up so many times before you begin to loathe even the idea of it.
