Default Re: Email, Downtime and Forum Roleplay

I'm going to probably have to go with A or B.

Granted, I'm unaware of how much email roleplay actually occurs seeing as I've not the time to persue it at the moment for numerous other reasons... which is why I'm not sure which.

However, from what little I do know of the common email roleplay that occurs, I think it's done in the wrong ways as some have previously pointed out.

I've always seen email roleplay as a way to further your personal goals. If it comes to a point of where things need to be acted out in a group, hold a private module to finish it all up. But when all of the world plot is done over email I think that's rather uninteresting to the players. For example, Xaria. To hear that the big baddie was just sort of killed at some point and noone except one or two people were there to actually witness it, it was sort of a disapointment. The players are supposed to be the powerful adventurers and thus they should have the opportunity to go and be powerful beyond the typical dungeon crawl.

I'm perfectly fine with most politics being done behind the scenes in emails. Great. Quite honestly unless you're fully aware of exactly what's going on politically, having that occur on a module can be quite tiresome. Taking 2 hours at the begining of a module to argue politics can be super fun, but not for a business oriented game. But when it comes to the battle, have it in game; make an overnighter or a weekender out of it. The players will feel so much more involved in actually being able to affect the world, which I think will lead to an overall better game for everyone.

On a much less important note concerning the favoritism aspect of roleplay, I understand why people are saying that. It often appears that it's just an elite group who gets email rp and gets things done. I think one problem is many players, especially newer ones, always hear about it and don't know how to get involved in it.

43 replies! Great for one day. I think this is fantastic! I bet we get another 5 or 6 in the next 48 hours or so (at least).

So far people are saying that the way it is running is good. Many have opinions of which parts they would like more of and which they would like less of. The part that I see that tells me I should adjust things is that I should try to ensure that more people IG get information and that downtime roleplay for big events (specifically Haven, Xaria, the duel (lol- between Scott's characters) etc should happen in-game and not OOG. I wish this were possible too and agree 100%.

Is it possible? Nope.

But can I do a better job at making sure that things that affect certain players is skewed towards events 100%, yes. I will still do email roleplay (vast majority like where it is) and downtime stuff. I will be more cognizent of certain player's wishes and try to have their plot only at events. I will change plot and involve more people so that they know what is going on at events better (less secrets and "sneaking" plot). Things will have to be less grey and more black/white for this, but I am sure I can still get in lots of grey ;-)

My suggestion for players that vote for less/none to understand that they are definitely in the minority. I will continue to cater to the majority. I will be cognizent of the issues, though, and try to adjust plot accordingly.

I have been told that the Battle at the Black Keep was horrible and made them want to quit. Many others said it was the best thing Mythic has ever done. I will stick with the majority. It is what I enjoy doing- which makes it easier, but I would adjust if the majority dictated such.

Luckily Lairoth exists and Mike (feeling the way he does) runs that campaign. It is not what I prefer running or the vast majority of you have asked for in Terath, but I LOVE Mike's campaigns. I loved Merge and love Lairoth. Is it what I would prefer vs my style- no. But I love it very much nevertheless.

So, in the end, I will make adjustments (eventually) but want to hear more about this. I want to hear from more players and continue this discussion here and on the staff and plot forums. I know some of you have gathered to discuss it and am certain others still will. Please don't make this a clique thing or us vs them. I am on Mythic's side- my players' side. I am certain you all are also!

So, no matter what the outcome is, PLEASE keep playing Terath and keep giving your feedback. Joe (sorry, bud) is an extremely close friend of mine and was worried that posting would be a betrayal of sorts. Although I really appreciated it, I encouraged him immediately to post. This is important for all of us. If we/I don't know what you prefer- how can we adjust things? How can we make things better?

James

im kinda b and c though granted i do not do much on the online/email RP mainly cus im lazy and work is annoying ..and i fully admit it. but at the same time I enjoy most of my larp experience in game

i have no problem with email RP between pc's and npc's and some personal plot and i know some world plot does get pulled into those and like the recent one i thought was very nicely written and understand things like that can be a bit on the hard side to do in game it was good but my only thing was how did that pc get there i might to be there i did not know that would be an option not to say it was not cool to see what he did that was very interesting but still one of those i might have actually interacted with this

but i do understand rp with npc's that you are not always able to talk too right in game and if it affects one pc (or more if they agree with it) thats fine but when it can affect people with out them knowing sometimes that can get a bit frustrating.

ps..i think that came out right work ebil melts my brain every day ..*sigh*

I'm not gonna bug everybody with a whole drawn out explanation of my reasons, but I will cast my vote for A and/or B.

It pains me that I lack the time to properly explain my thoughts. My vote goes to to B.
